This is a Day-long workshop focused on practical strategies for guiding students to output

    When? Wednesday August 13, 2025

Where? Algonquin Regional High School - Northborough, MA

    Who? Catherine Ritz

Workshop Title? Achieving 90%+: Boosting Student Target Language Use and Learner Interaction

Attaining ACTFL’s standard of 90%+ target language use for teachers and students is easier than it seems! With classroom-proven, highly effective techniques and strategies, all teachers can reach and even exceed the 90% mark. But let’s not forget about our students! Student target language use should also reach 90% of class time. With careful planning, appropriate scaffolds, clear modeling, and high expectations, students can achieve this goal. In this workshop, we’ll look at highly effective teaching strategies for increasing target language use for teachers and students and explore ways to motivate all students to use the target language to develop their oral proficiency. We’ll also explore research-based practices for cultivating a communicative learning environment, designing authentic Interpersonal communicative tasks, and establishing expectations for student target language use. We will look at numerous classroom examples with time for hands-on collaboration so that teachers can develop material for use in their own classrooms.
